Obsidian Rough

Obsidian  is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is an igneous rock. Obsidian is produced from felsic lava, rich in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows. These flows have a high content of silica, giving them a high viscosity. The high viscosity inhibits diffusion of atoms through the lava, which inhibits the first step (nucleation) in the formation of mineral crystals. Together with rapid cooling, this results in a natural glass forming from the lava. Because of its dark color, Obsidian can absorb dense or dark energy. You can hand over the darkness to your stone and allow it to carry those energies for you so you can move on to brighter days. Our favorite way to use the Obsidian crystal properties for protection is to create a crystal program for yourself. Ruled by the planet Pluto, Black Obsidian is a teacher stone and could be deemed the “Warrior of Truth.” It is the most powerful of the Obsidians and does not cater to the ego; rather it exposes darkened areas of the subconscious to force one to face one’s true self. The Obsidian meaning is one of the most powerful for protection, but it works differently than many other protective crystals. Whereas other dark stones for protection work by shielding you from negativity, an Obsidian crystal brings negativity within your energy field to the surface and allows you to confront the unwanted energy you have been holding onto. By bringing your awareness to these darker energies, you can release them.
